The Sustainable Way! Discovering Opportunities From Energy System Engineering to Forestry!

Academic lectures will be conducted by the head Prof. Dr. Dr. Martina Schäfer of the Centre of Technique and Society at TU Berlin. The institutes’ primary focus of research entails the core of sustainability, general theoretical concepts, methods and normative implications. Moreover it has active cooperation with other institutes. Research in sustainability must not become arbitrary!

Taking into account this general approach, the participants will be confronted with questions regarding sustainability in energy systems. Lectures, which are currently in preparation, will deal with efficient utilization of waste heat in gas turbines using waste heat recovery systems. From this course the participant can learn about design of engineering systems which focusses on improved utilization of fuel and furthermore consider environmental protection.

Possible excursions are a visit to the PTZ – Production Technology Centre of Fraunhofer and EUREF Campus in Berlin Schöneberg, where students can drive an electric vehicle and experience practical research in power grids that combine renewable energies with future mobility concepts.

In Dresden the focus will be on the origin of sustainability. Sustainability comes from the forestry and coined on the principle “no more trees are cut down than can actually grow again”. Under this motto Prof. Dr. N. Weber will take a closer look to the milestones on the road to sustainable forest management.

Another area that will be considered is the waste management. Dr. Christoph Wünsch from the department of waste management and contaminated site will look at Sustainability by integrated waste management systems.

Furthermore we will visit some companies who concentrate on sustainability. In addition the participants will have the opportunity to discuss their view on sustainability through a seminar.
